The printer uses the Ghostscript PDF converter. Ghostscript is an open source program that is able to convert PostScript to PDF files. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License. It works by creating a virtual printer that prints to PDF files, and thereby allows practically any application to create PDF files by choosing to print from within the application and then printing to the PDFCreator printer.[3] Between 2009 and 2012 PDFCreator included a controversial, optional closed source adware toolbar that was installed by default.
